2-Storey Modular Transportable Units in Bulgarra

The 8 single bed modular units in Bulgarra were designed to challenge the transient quality of single-man living spaces prominent in the Pilbara. With transportable construction, the most cost-effective building method, the design explored solutions for low privacy, poor acoustic and thermal performance, and the sense of lightweight impermanence synonymous with transportable spaces.

The precast concrete floor and wall shells were designed to offer structural solidarity, a durable finish and strong thermal and acoustic properties. Steel framed balconies and walkways were incorporated to lower transport weight - their primary structural members cast into the slabs, and the walkways/balconies themselves bolted on after site install. Alternatives to traditional materials, including composite timber decking and timber grained aluminium screens, were specified as durable substitutes in the harsh Pilbara climate.

For build efficiency, all units were completed and internally finished entirely in Perth prior to transportation in modular form. Continuous external elements such as cedar soffit linings and balcony fascias were installed on-site so as to connect the modules, reducing the visual impact of the singularity of the transportables.

A spacious and shady communal pool and BBQ area were incorporated for liveability, and to encourage social interaction and community in the otherwise neighbourless expanse of single-man Pilbara living.
